With the realization that good wine is becoming more common, many wine lovers are willing to pay more to discover a new, hopefully better wine. The move to the $50 higher class opens up another class of wine that expands our options.

That is, of course, if you’re lucky. But only if you are willing to do the necessary research (no pun intended, one bottle is enough!). Only then can you enjoy the potential benefits.

Luckily for you (well, even more so for us), we’ve selected some of the best red wines for under $50 and given our opinion on which ones we think are worth trying.

1. Karema Riserva 2015

Main product characteristics

Nebbiolo is an Italian grape variety closely associated with its region of origin, Piedmont, where it produces the famous wines Controllata e Garantita Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Gattinara and Carema. The latter, Karema, is one of the least known, but he deserves to be more discovered and recognized.

This 2015 Riserva is a perfect example of what you can expect from a winery that doesn’t just name the grape, but the wine as well. So much so that Antonio Galloni, of Vinous, calls it a totally stunning, exciting wine and gives it 95 points.

The Wired for the Wine supplier also praises the product, which he describes as probably the best kept secret in our book, adding that its production is extremely low and we limit it to one case per account.

It’s good to drink now until 2035, the chance to get a bottle is quite rare, so don’t miss out. Especially at this price.

What we like about the Carema Riserva 2015

It is a dark Carmela, full of aromas and flavors after 36 months of aging in oak barrels.

Initial pleasant notes of alcoholic fruits and dried flowers give way to the universal appeal and power of cherries, cocoa, cinnamon, tobacco, licorice and dried herbs on the nose.

On the palate, the 2015 Carema Riserva is luxuriously smooth and complemented by deep layers of black cherry and less, coffee, chestnut and cocoa. All this adds up to good mid-palate density, with a long finish supported by lively acidity, strong structure and persistent sweet tannins.

He can get drunk on almost anything. Or nothing, per se. The cellar itself says it goes particularly well with roasts, game, red meat and mature but not strong cheeses.

What we don’t like about Karema Riserva 2015

We found that it was not as lively and brilliant as the previous vintage we tested, and a little spicy in the finish due to the acidity.

  • Maybe there’s not enough intrigue.

2. Achaval-Ferrer Kimer 2016

Main product characteristics

This wine from Mendoza in Argentina is a delicious and fruity blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

Aging for 12 months in French oak barrels gives it a vintage elegance that is both drinkable and long-lasting.

It is best served at this temperature of 16-18 degrees Celsius for a medium-bodied wine. Cook for at least an hour before use and when you do, the red meat is perfect, as you would expect from an Argentine red.

What we like about Achaval-Ferrer Quimera 2016

It is a harmonious marriage between the light femininity of light fruits and spices and the raw masculinity of dark and earthy.

The latter has rich black plums, blackberries, blueberries and black currants with notes of spicy balsamic, stony graphite, smoky tobacco and spicy oak. But as in any good marriage, a slightly seductive touch of red berries, cedar, chocolate, rosemary and vanilla is needed for balance and support. This is due to the widespread production of tannins.

The 2016 Achaval-Ferrer Quimera is as deep and complex as it seems. It’s just as well.

What we don’t like about Achaval-Ferrer Kimmer 2016

All in all, one can expect a little more shine and refinement from these French barrels. Although with 12 months to run it probably didn’t meet those expectations.

PROS

  • An amazing collection
  • Perfect for red meat and good pasta.
  • Like a sexual love story

SUMMARY

  • It’s not as smooth as I’d like.
  • It’s a little sour.

3. Marques de Murrieta Reserva Rioja 2016

Main product characteristics

The year 2016 was a cool year in La Rioja, which resulted in an excellent harvest. The grapes for this vintage were harvested later than usual, in late September.

Results? A Rioja that is more subtle and textured than usual. Certainly more than the previous vintage we know. The detail and texture of the palate and tannins are very different.

What is not is that it still has, with confidence, the power of the more traditional Rioja. And as such it is suitable for most products.

  • Variety: 87% Tempranillo, 6% Graziano, 5% Mazuello, 2% Garnacha
  • Title : La Rioja, Spain
  • The wine: The Marquis of Murrieta
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Bottle: 750 ml

What we like about Marques de Murrieta Reserva Rioja 2016

Marques de Murrieta is a safe and stable brand of the highest quality and value. As always, their expertise and attention to detail is evident in the production of this 2016 Reserva, which will take nearly four years to complete.

Notes of dark wood and black olives precede the rich black cherry and berry flavors in this beautifully balanced red wine. There are also notes of two year old American oak barrels in new and some new 225 litre American oak barrels.

It is then aged in the bottle for 18 months so that the tannins and acidity of the orange peel are well integrated and the texture remains smooth. Balanced and spicy style. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Drink till 2026.

Marques de Murrieta Reserva Rioja 2016 is a complex red wine, structured and powerful, but with surprising subtlety and elegance.

What we don’t like about Marques de Murrieta Reserva Rioja 2016

We heard about some discrepancies and inconsistencies between the bottles.

PROS

  • Rich in body, balanced tannins, medium dry and good acidity.
  • A subtle but pleasant feeling of oak….
  • The color is a beautiful deep ruby red.

SUMMARY

  • The nose was on the caramel
  • On the palate it is short, dry and easily bitter.

4. Double Lariat Jamieson Ranch Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Main product characteristics

Although it is only 30 miles long and 5 miles wide and produces only 4% of the Golden State’s wine, Napa Valley gives the impression of being a dominant American wine scene, not just Californians.

The region has already made its name in the world for its quality wines and their distinctive characteristics. This is due in large part to the unique geography, which creates a favorable climate, as well as the microclimate and soil diversity in the interior. The valley has up to 40 soil types, so two vineyards side by side can produce very contrasting wines. The southern tip of Jamison Ranch produces outstanding wines that showcase the historic strength and boldness of the American West.

A 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Double Lariat whose character has been somewhat tempered by fermentation and 16 months of aging in French oak barrels. This and subsequent vintages have received consistently high marks from respected critics.

What we like about Jamieson Ranch Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Double Lariat 2014

The beauty of this wine lies in its integration of black and red fruit, oak, cedar and seductive tannins. It’s an elaborate, luxurious taxi.

With notes of anise, blackcurrant, vanilla, chocolate and cedar on the nose, and blackberry, plum, black and red cherry and raspberry on the palate. And a very nice, long finish.

The result is a big, bold red wine of such civilized elegance that purchases are limited to 3 bottles per customer.

Drink now or wait another ten years. It goes particularly well with sweet lamb, smoked beef and mushrooms.

What we don’t like about Double Lariat Jamieson Ranch Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

We were hoping it would open up more after a few hours of decanting with air. But alas, it has remained a little closed. At least according to our wishes.

PROS

  • Drinks such as wine for double the price
  • Very good vinification
  • Very good for a young, old man.

SUMMARY

  • Quality checks
  • Good fruit, but too sweet.

5. Baileana Firepick Pinot Noir 2018

Main product characteristics

Baileana’s winemaker, Rob Takigawa, has been with the winery for 20 years. It is a great experience and knowledge of the fruits of the Edna Paragon Valley vineyard.

Paragon is located in the heart of the valley, just 5.4 miles from the Pacific Ocean, making it the coldest of all California development areas. The grapes show the many nuances of this unique region.

The 2018 Baileana Firepick Pinot Noir 2018 Baileana Firepick highlights these wonderful things. Especially when accompanied by tuna or seared salmon, rare meat, rustic stew or roast chicken or pork.

  • The wine: Baileana
  • Alcohol: 15.5%
  • Bottle: 750 ml

What we like about Bayleighan Fairpeak Pinot Noir 2018

The cooler climate helps to extend the growing season in the Edna Valley. This allows the grapes to develop the most complete varietal expression of complex and intense flavors, as the 2018 Bayleighan Fairpeak Pinot Noir demonstrates.

Red cherry nose with berries, cinnamon, mint and tobacco. The palate is brighter with black fruits, vanilla, root beer and cola, plus a pinch of spice and thyme.

All of this is complemented by firm acidity and structure before ending in a lush finish with soft, suppletannins.

What we don’t like about the Baileana Firepick 2018 Pinot Noir

If you only enjoy a good glass or two (and let’s face it, who doesn’t), then by way of exception for a Pinot, this is not for you. It’s definitely a wine to enjoy with dinner.

PROS

  • A good combination of berries and a slight spiciness.
  • Smoky, sensual and seductive….
  • Long light opening

SUMMARY

  • Not enough.
  • Too strong for Pinot.

6. Reata Las Brisas Pinot Noir 2015

Main product characteristics

However, the 2015 Reata Las Brisas Pinot Noir is definitely a wine you can drink alone. This is a conventionally lighter Pinot than the 2018 Baileana. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the food. Accompanied by poached salmon with lemon zest or duck with orange and citrus glaze, it’s delicious.

Reata picks grapes in the vineyards of Las Brisas, in the hills of Sonoma County. Here the cooling of the coastal air ensures that the grapes can ripen optimally. The dry and warm weather of late spring 2015 and the mild summer ensured that this particularly tasty, colorful and elegant Pinot Noir met this standard. This grape variety is rated better than any other vintage for this wine, of which only 150 cases were produced.

What we like about Reata Las Brisas Pinot Noir 2015

An exceptional pinot. Elegant, expressive, fragrant and delicious. A very light wine with fine oak and vanilla notes, but expressive notes of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, red currant and strawberry.

Well structured and with an attractive aroma, it is tasty and well structured. It moves in the mouth with a pleasant silky feel. Perfectly balanced, there is a touch of minerality on the long, languid finish.

It is a very impressive Pinot. Especially for the price.

What we don’t like about Reata Las Brisas Pinot Noir 2015

It can be too dry and spicy for the taste of some drinkers.

  • Funnier than I thought.

As we wrote in the introduction, if you have the privilege of increasing your spending to the $50 limit, you are exposing yourself to a different kind of red.

Therefore, it is very difficult to choose a wine for different occasions and declare it the best. They all have their merits, but we think the Marques de Murrieta Reserva Rioja 2016 is the best. At least to our taste.
