5. Trial week: Cabin Merlot from Bordeaux, France.
Call for trials: Bordeaux – the famous French red mixture
Bordeaux is a bit mysterious for your taste, because producers in the Bordeaux region are allowed to use six different grape varieties in their red blends.
The fact that so many variations are allowed testifies to the know-how of these producers, but they constantly produce wines that maintain this reputation for quality.
We have chosen a bottle of Bordeaux Supérieur from the Entre-de-Mers sub-region, which is best known for its white blends, but which in recent years has gained a reputation as an affordable red Bordeaux.
We also wanted it to be simple. Although Bordeaux allows six grape varieties in its blends, only the two most popular and widespread varieties are used in this special bottle: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

But in other Bordeaux blends you can use Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Carménère: it’s a whole range of combinations!
2018 Supermarket Château de Camarsac Bordeaux
Take a look at this: Deep ruby red.
Perfumes: Blueberries, raspberries, black pepper, pencil shavings, menthol, black cherry and fresh herbs. Very juicy and cooked.
In the palace: Full-bodied, but smooth and velvety, with a good balance between acidity and tannins. Notes of chocolate-covered cherries, mint, cedar and a little bitter green on the aftertaste.
Steamed food: Any smoked meat would be perfect for this. Think of a steak with fries, ribs or brisket for a barbecue.
What have we learned about Bordeaux?
When it comes to finding a Bordeaux you like, it’s important to know the sub-regions. The first step is to find out the difference between the banks. The Bordeaux region stretches along the Gironde estuary, which divides it in two.
On the left you will find regions that normally use Cabernet Sauvignon for most of their blends.
On the right bank, Merlot is the favorite main grape. And since this bottle consists of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, one can rightly assume that this is a Right Bank blend.
What Merlot does for sweeter, fruity jams than one would normally expect from something heavier in Cabernet Sauvignon. On the other hand, this 35% Cab fits well with the black pepper and its menthol-like tones by adding spiciness and bitterness.
You’re good for yourself.
But when these grapes work together, the wine is much more complex and interesting. Thanks to this collaboration, these two varieties are the most widespread red grape varieties in the world. Where you see one, you probably see the other!
Grapes are vinified separately and then blended to create a balance.
The most interesting thing about tasting red Bordeaux is that there are so many different ways to prepare it. In fact, it ensures that you find a sub-region or at least a bank you can rely on to produce something you like.
