If you haven’t heard the news, now is the time: Silicon Valley’s O’Neill Vintners & Distillers recently released a line of wine that pays homage to the popular film “Ready Player One.” Based on the global blockbuster from Warner Bros., the “Game Box Wine” line features wines that are named for of-the-moment pop-culture icons from the past and present. So, for example, the “Game Box Red” wine is named for a video game icon from the ’80s, while the “Game Box White” wine is named for a video game icon from the ’90s.

In a sea of wine labels proclaiming “Chardonnay” or “Merlot”, O’Neill Vintners & Distillers may seem like an odd name for a winery—but they’re not. The company’s name is misleading, because the first thing you’ll notice about their wines is the bottle.

So it says on the original packaging of the premium wine brand Inside-The-Box: I’m here to play.

Larkspur, California. – 21. June 2021. – Game Night just got a new teammate: O’Neill Vintners & Distillers begins selling wines from the game box (SRP $25) throughout the United States. Game Box is reshuffling the cards by introducing premium California appellation wines with vintage labels that are, you guessed it, packaged. (And very intriguing… hint: the pages contain riddles for the mind). The brand includes high quality wines with character and distinction, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and attractive Red Blend varieties.

Anyone who remembers exploring the back of their favorite cereal box will immediately understand the wines inside, says Christine Moll, marketing director of O’Neill Vintners & Distillers. We have created delicious premium wines in unique and creative packaging. The 3L can category is gaining momentum as new consumers discover the convenience and value of this format. So we wanted to give them an attractive brand to play with.

Game Box Wines mysteriously makes four bottles of wine disappear into a convenient and extraordinarily portable three-litre container, adorned with ridiculously mind-boggling artwork, puzzles, riddles and stories (and maybe even a few hidden Easter eggs) that say right away: Tonight’s gonna be a great night. The smart and attractive design significantly reduces waste and packaging costs and offers fun and convenience at an affordable price. Not to mention that the wine stays fresh longer, so you can enjoy it 3 to 4 weeks longer, instead of the usual 2 to 3 days in a glass bottle. (Thanks, magic nose!)

Wine lovers will find it hard to resist the temptation of an expanded Game Box delivery from veteran winemaker Stephen DeCosta. Only the best grapes are selected from the best locations in California, with specific terroirs and climates chosen to develop the complex ripe and fresh fruit characteristics of each variety.

You can order your own smart and delicious gamebox online at gameboxwine.com/wines or find it at your local specialty store starting in July 2021.

Samples

The appeal of Game Box’s powerful, creamy, rich 2020 Chardonnay comes from its warm California climate and time spent in oak, leaving behind notes of vanilla, baked pie crust, caramelized sugar and praline.

Our dry, full-bodied 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is sweet, like a river meandering through the Golden State, with rich, dark blueberry and blackberry notes that hide mocha and cedar.

The 2019 Pinot Grigio is wonderfully refreshing and has an appealing brightness that screams California summer, with bright white nectarine and citrus notes that transition into floral honeysuckle notes.

The deliciousness of our 2019 red wine blend may have more to do with alchemy than a specific grape variety. Our master winemaker blends selected grapes from the best regions of California to achieve juicy, jammy blackberry and cherry flavors with subtle black pepper notes.
