The Licence IV label has been around for some time, and the latest release is a great example of why the label has been so successful. The wine is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, and is made in the same regions where those grapes are grown. An award-winning sommelier is shaking up the French wine world by canning high-end wines, including the first-ever Muscadet.

Licence-IV-Introduces-First-Fine-French-Wine-in-CansNEW YORK, NEW YORK (19 JULY 2021) — Licence IV, the French wine brand created for the inquisitive and adventurous who love great wine without the rules, is extending its offerings in the United States to include French wine in cans. Blanc – the first-ever Muscadet produced in this format – and Rosé, the company’s first canned products, are currently available in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, New York, and Washington, and will continue to roll out in fine wine stores throughout the country this year.

Licence IV, created by French sommelier Gregory Castells, challenges the notion that French wine is scary by creating a range of wines that are sophisticated but approachable without sacrificing quality or flavor. All of the wines are produced by small, family-owned wineries in France and chosen with the same care that Martine’s Wines, the parent business of Licence IV, does with its wines.

Licence IV is the name of the permission that enables cafés, restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs in France to sell alcohol. Throughout France, official enameled signs may be seen affixed to the walls of these businesses. 

Blanc — A Melon de Bourgogne from the Loire Valley’s eastern banks, this will be the first-ever Muscadet to be available in cans. The palate is bright and invigorating, with scents of freshly cut grass, salty lime zest, and gun flint, while the mid palate is dry and evocative of citrus and oyster shells, with a herbal, saline finish. It goes well with oysters and clams, as well as marcona almonds, salty butter, bread, and anchovies. It’s also delicious with fresh chevre.

Rosé is a Grenache (80%) and Merlot (20%) combination produced in Provence from sustainably farmed grapes. On the nose, there are notes of blood orange, fresh strawberries, and pink peonies, while on the taste, there are notes of strawberries and pomegranate. It has a bright and refreshing finish that begs for another glass. It’s great with caprese salad, charcuterie, or marinated octopus, but it’s much better on its own.

Rouge, a red wine from Licence IV, is a Grenache (85%) and Syrah (15%) combination from Valréas in the Southern Rhône. Rouge is presently available in 1 liter bottles, with cans coming out in 2022.

Gregory Castells, a Provence native, began Licence IV as part of his continuing quest for a life full of delectable wine and cuisine. Gregory went on to establish the wine program at Gordon Ramsay’s Petrus in London and became head sommelier at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Napa Valley after attending the Escoffier Restaurant School and Tain L’Hermitage Sommelier School. Martine Saunier hand-picked him to take over Martine’s Wines, a storied national importer and distributor of exquisite wines, in 2012. Gregory operates Martine’s with his girlfriend and CEO, Kate Laughlin, and often travels to France and abroad in search of high-quality wines for American tables and stores. 

Licence IV made its debut in 2017, with the first 1 liter screw cap bottles of Blanc, Rosé, and Rouge.
