December 2020. – Jackson Family Wines was named UK Beverage Industry Green Company of the Year 2020 at the annual presentation of the Green Awards. The purpose of the Green Awards is to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the global beverage industry and to recognise companies and individuals who are leaders in environmental and social performance.

Each year, a beverage company selects the Green Award for a company or organisation that has clearly demonstrated its commitment to protecting the environment by changing and improving its business practices to improve its carbon footprint.  The jury looks at companies that have improved their own direct environmental impacts and communicated effectively to a wider audience, highlighting all the ways in which they have tried to improve their environmental performance over the past three years, with an emphasis on the activities of the past twelve months.

At Jackson Family Wines, we are all honored with this prestigious international recognition from Drinks Business for our sustainability and climate protection initiatives, said Kathy Jackson, second-generation owner and senior vice president of corporate social responsibility at Jackson Family Wines. As a multi-generation family vineyard, environmental protection is at the heart of everything we do on all our farms around the world, from breeding and winemaking to sales and distribution channels and much more, she added.

Since planting their first vines in 1974, the Jackson family has created exceptional wines based on ecological and social responsibility for soil conservation, low-impact farming, innovative methods to save water and energy, and business practices that improve the lives of their employees and communities. The winery has been measuring its carbon footprint since 2008 and has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 17.5% in absolute terms since 2015, within a range of 1 to 3. Since then, the company has recently made a public commitment to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 and become climate-friendly by 2050, without buying offsets, in line with the 1.5 C emission reduction targets that the scientific community believes are necessary for the planet to avoid the worst effects of climate change. As the largest local producer of solar energy in the U.S. wine industry, Jackson Family Wines produces 8.6 million kWh of electricity from renewable sources in 12 wineries, offsetting the annual electricity consumption of approximately 1,100 households. Looking to the future, Jackson Femily Vines is developing bold resilience targets for 2030 and beyond to demonstrate that agriculture is capable of producing positive results with minimal climate impact, with a focus on renewable farming practices, holistic land management, water management and social impacts.

In 2019, Jackson Family Wines and the Spanish company Familia Torres founded the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) to tackle the urgent problem of climate change and encourage collective action to decarbonise the wine industry.  This close cooperation, which currently involves ten wineries from six different countries, has provided an important basis for complying with a standardised and third-party verified methodology for accounting for greenhouse gas emissions and for prioritising best practices and mitigation strategies to be used by wineries around the world to decarbonise the wine industry.  This year the IWCA was also nominated for the Green Awards in the Amorim Sustainability category for one of the associations.

Let’s go to 11. For the seventh time, the Green Awards will reward companies that continue to reduce their impact on the environment and make a difference in the fight against climate change.  In addition to the Green Business of the Year Awards, the Green Business of the Year Award also selects winners in the following categories: Sustainability Award, Biodiversity Award, Green Packaging and Water Management Award, Renewable Energy Implementation Award, Green Person, Green Retailer and Wholesaler of the Year, Green Logistics and Supply Chain Initiative, Best Green Start, Ethics Award, Best Organic Initiative and Green Living Activities.
