To find out, we tasted 10 unoaked chardonnays from around the world, to see which you should be drinking with your food.  To broaden our search, we tasted wines from both vintages and countries, including white burgundies, french chablis, australian and new zealand chardonnays, and wines made with the sauvignon blanc grape.

When you think of crisp and clean, what comes to mind? A glass of water? The sound of rain on the roof? A 1970s-era platform shoe? All of the above? Because crisp and clean are words used to describe a lot of things, but most agree that they are most often used in reference to white wine. And if you’re looking for a wine that is crisp and clean, you should try an unoaked chardonnay.

Chardonnay is the most widely grown white grape in the world, and for good reason. Its incredible versatility allows it to produce complex, maturing Champagne wines as well as coveted pure white Burgundy wines.

But while aged Chardonnays remain popular, unripened Chardonnays show a livelier side of the grape. All of these wines are fermented in stainless steel and range from light and simple to serious and mature.

Tolosa 2019 No Oak Heritage Chardonnay (Central Coast); $23, 91 points. Lots of lemongrass and lime aromas give this wine a very fresh and spicy nose that also has elements of grapefruit zest and oyster shell.
