Calistoga, Calif. (March 23, 2021) – After the devastating effects of the Glass Fire in October 2020, the Castello di Amorosa Dario Sattui team promises to be ready for the next red flag alert in Napa Valley. A new fire crew was announced today to provide additional protection during the fire season. It is equipped with firefighting equipment and thousands of feet of fire hose connected to 3 Castello hydrants located on the property.

The glass fire affected our company very quickly, says Georg Salzner, president of Castello di Amorosa. We were there when it happened in the early morning hours and we did what we could, but we felt we could have done more to limit the damage. We could have been a more valuable resource for the firefighters, who were in high demand that night, he added.

Salzner has assembled a firefighting team of eight long-time employees who know the intricacies of the castle, its grounds and Dario Sattuya’s Victorian home near the castle’s main gate. This team is known as the Cavalleri del Fuoco, which means Knights of Fire in Italian. This team sets up a fire watch and is ready to respond to a red flag alarm and assist the fire department. They will at all times create and maintain a defensible space around all structures by eliminating the threat posed by these structures as much as possible.

It is of the utmost importance that we take fire safety measures now, says Salzner. We have equipped the team with the right equipment. With the thousands of feet of fire hose we have purchased to support the work of the firefighters, all of downtown Costello can be reached, he continued.

Cavalieri del Fuoco is managed by Salzner, Tim Dexter, who is responsible for maintenance, and Josh Fairbanks, owner of Fairbanks Mechanical (which manages all of the Castello’s mechanical systems, including the fire protection equipment).  Carlos Perez, longtime employee, is the official chief of the Cavalieri Fire Department.

Our main goal, Tim Dexter explains, is a safety distance of 150 feet between all structures and flammable vegetation. Sweeping, tree trimming (branches below ground) and clearing of brush will be done with our newly purchased wood chipper. This process eliminates fire sources and prevents fire from becoming a hazard. In the summer and fall, gutters are cleaned regularly to eliminate fuel sources near the rooflines. With the new hoses, we can also water the top of the roof, he adds.

To make the property less of a fire hazard, Costello invested nearly $100,000 in firefighting equipment. These include a portable water pump that draws water from the lake, adapters for existing fire hydrants, thousands of feet of high-pressure fire hose and nozzles, and special firefighting equipment for workers.

Each hydrant can be equipped with two 4-inch hoses, allowing for the use of 1.5-inch fire hoses. Firefighters then attach hoses to the hydrant and can begin extinguishing the fire with a powerful jet of water that can reach up to 150 feet.

Castello di Amorosa is one of the most renowned wineries in the Napa Valley and welcomes visitors seven days a week by appointment. More information: https://castellodiamorosa.com/
