It is often best to start by tasting and discovering a variety. A sweet wine is ideal because it doesn’t challenge your palate too quickly. These wines are generally considered easier to drink because they have a higher residual sugar content and generally lower alcohol and tannin levels. They are therefore considered to be inviting wines for beginners and a good introduction to the world of wine tasting.

Among all wine categories, there are sweet wines. And among these, sweetness types can range from light to full-bodied. That means the choices can be overwhelming.

1. Limit switch no. 239 Riesling dry 2017

Main product characteristics

Perhaps the most famous sweet wine is Riesling. Originating in the Rhine region of Germany, it is full of flavors ranging from fragrant flowers to apples, pears and peaches.

The esteemed Robert Parker, Jr. Wine Advocate, call this 2017 dry Riesling No. 239 a rather luxurious and super Burgundian.

Do you like to eat spicy Asian dishes like Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Indian? Then this is the right thing for you to do. Beautiful ripe fruit and crisp acidity for balance make it perfect. Or even if you want to drink it yourself as an aperitif.

What we like about border crossings #239 Riesling sec 2017

Boundary Breaks winery picks the fruit for this wine much later than is typical for most dry Rieslings. This means that the ripe fruit has an unusual tropical flavor. Balanced by invigorating acidity, this wine is clean and crisp, but also brilliant and powerful.

Aromatic notes on the nose of crushed limestone, freshly prepared lime blossom and white flowers are key to this wine. On the palate, the first thing you notice is the ripe fruit, which is surprisingly rich for a dry Riesling variety.

But the dry, medium-bodied space offers a complex mix of earthy and spicy elements alongside the fruit, with flavors of crisp yellow apple, lime, fresh ginger and wet stone. A sensual note of white plum adds a touch of sugar at the end of the mouth.

What we don’t like about Border Breaks No. 239 Riesling trocken 2017

Light and refreshing Riesling, but not particularly complex.

With more minerals than usual, it’s almost too sweet for a dry Riesling. It has to be crisp and without that it is neither (dry) nor (sweet).


  • A good dinner, not too sweet and well balanced, accompanied by…
  • An explosion of fruit, pears and light lemon zest….
  • Enough acidity to balance the fruit but maintain a sweet finish.


  • It’s not exactly what you’d expect from a dry Riesling.

2. Chidein Monlui Burne Sec 2018

Main product characteristics

Native to the Loire Valley in France, Chenin Blanc is not always sweet, but it is generally considered a dessert wine.

In 2018, the François Chidein Monlouis Le Bourne received a rave review and 96 points from Antonio Galloni’s Vinous. It’s not hard to see why, and we agree with Galloni’s assessment that this is a wine of surprising complexity and nuance…. The Bournais are amazing at first glance.

In terms of culinary appointments, Chenin Blanc goes well with saturated dishes, as its acidity reduces fat. It accompanies savory dishes, pork and duck, as well as cheese and sweet desserts.

What we like about Chidane Monlui Burne Sec 2018

Winemaker François Chidein is a pioneer of natural viticulture, with a deep love and respect for the soil of Montlouis-sur-Loire in the Loire Valley. He is committed to regenerative agriculture, and with some success, judging by this wine.

Certified organic and biodynamic, this love and respect for the earth can be felt and tasted in this Chidaine Montlouis Bournais Sec. 2018.

A fragrant nose of honey, lemon, minerals, toast, white flowers and apple.

Dried flowers, lime, mint, lemon and tangerine seduce the palate. It’s as good as it sounds.

It is like liquid gold in the mouth that is at once translucent, substantial and dense. The balance, of course, is perfect. It is a masterful vinification that can be drunk until 2035.

What we don’t like about Chidane Monlui Burne Sec 2018

What’s wrong with keeping such good wine? Some may find it too rich and not fresh enough. If only they were extra tough!


  • François Childan’s best wine, the Chenin Blanc, is absolutely stunning.
  • The nectar of the gods!
  • It’s worth every penny, and more. What a bargain!

3. FLO Moscato 2016

Main product characteristics

Muscat is a sweet dessert wine with a low alcohol content compared to dry wines, sometimes as low as 5.5%. This guarantees a high sugar content, giving the wine its characteristic taste.

Originally from northern Italy, the nutmeg grape now grows all over the world, including, not surprisingly, in the Napa Valley. And that’s exactly where FLO (For the Love Of) Wines created this unique California sample.

They believe that much of today’s Moscato is too sweet and that the excess sugar outweighs the other components of the wine. They prolong fermentation to reduce residual sugar, bringing out the vibrant fruit notes and flavors.


  • Variety: Moscato, white American.

  • The wine: FLO
  • Alcohol: 11%

What we like about the Florida Moscato 2016

Typical Muscovite notes of apricot and peach are complemented by honeysuckle, melon and orange blossom on the nose and rose petals, lilies and other flowers on the palate.

The skin of the mouth is soft, but not too viscous. Sure, it’s cute, but it’s never fake. Quite soft, but light.

FLO Moscato 2016 is beautifully balanced, bright, with fresh flavors and just the right amount of sweetness. It’s like summer in a jar.

What we don’t like about the Florida Moscato 2016

Of course it all comes down to personal preference, but for some it won’t be sweet enough for a Moscat.

And the alcohol content is 11% higher than the Moscato average, so you better watch out.


  • Not too sweet for a Moscat, but that makes it a good starting point for beginners.
  • The grape, not the residual sugar, is the star.

4. Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif 2017

Main product characteristics

Red wine with this Californian Durif, a Little Sirah grape variety. Because the California Petite Sirah grape is very small, its skins and seeds are the source of its sweetness and its tannin and color.

If the climate of the Suisun Valley is the same as the Napa Valley, the soils are very different.  This makes it an ideal product for growing Durif grapes. That’s why winemaker Chuck Wagner wanted to introduce a new wine from the Swisson Valley worthy of the Caymus brand. Like the other Caymus wines, the 2017 Grand Durif does not disappoint.


  • Variety: 100% Durif (Petite Sirah), American red wine
  • Title : Suisun Valley, California.

  • Alcohol: 9.5%

What we like in Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif 2017

The almost purple body is full of black biscuits, blackberries, blueberries and plums. The more subtle aromas of lavender and white rose petals give way to more pronounced flavors of pepper, licorice, sweet smoke and brown spices.

The palate is as sweet as one would think. The tannins are high and strong while remaining soft and luxurious. The berries return, followed by chocolate for a long, warm finish.

The 2017 Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif can be enjoyed now, but because it is still young, it has great aging potential. Every time you open it and drink it, it should go wonderfully with richer meats like beef, lamb and game.

What we don’t like about Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif 2017

You have to be a fan of oak flavors to fully enjoy it. We also found it a little too heavy.


  • Rich, dark and deep, rich in black fruit, good tannins.
  • A surprisingly rich red

5. Old vines of Tarim Hill 2017

Main product characteristics

With this monstrance we return to the old world of Spain. With rustic notes that include tar, toast and tobacco smoke, this grape offers a nice balance of earthy flavors to all the sweet and candied fruits.

The Wine Spectator called this Monastrell from old Tarim Hill 2017 vines a smart buy and gave it a score of 92 points. It’s not hard to see why, and we think it’s an excellent choice for budding sweet wine lovers.


  • Variety: 100% Monastery, Spanish red wine
  • Title : Valencia, Spain
  • The wine: Tarima Hill
  • Alcohol: 15%
  • Bottle: 750 ml, cap

What we want in the old vineyards of Tarim Hill 2017

The hill of Tarima consists of old vines, hence the name, that grow to 2000-2500 feet. After harvest and pressing, the grapes are aged for 20 months in French oak. This medium and process produces a luxurious cherry color with rich ruby hues.

The nose is sweet with ripe raspberries, blueberries and blueberry liqueur fruits. But enough spice, graphite and a touch of balsamic to land. And the flowers are not forgotten with the acacia flowers.

Swirl it around in the glass and you’ll be drawn to its full body, accompanied by a rich mouthfeel as it enters. It reveals a beautiful wine, rocking, with notes of ripe black fruit, leather and spice. Another wine to enjoy with roasted red meat and with stew or other red sauce with pasta.

What we don’t like about Tarim Hill’s old vines 2017

Too earthy for sweet wine? Too heavy and syrupy? We were divided and could not make a decision. You be the judge of that.


  • The best Monastery of old vines up to 90 years old.
  • Complicated and delicious

  • Too much clove flavor
  • Bitter on the forehead.

6. Pink Banfi scale

Main product characteristics

It is a sparkling rose from Italy, but darker and sweeter than usual. This is because it is made from Bracchetto, a complex aromatic and sweet grape variety that only grows in the Aqui Terme region in southern Piedmont.

The wine is called Brachetto d’Acqui, and because it is only produced here, it has the Controllata e Garantita or Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOCG) classification, the highest in Italy. Each DOCG wine is tasted and analyzed by a panel of state-approved judges before being bottled and given a numbered state seal on the cork.

Brachetto d’Acqui wines have a bright ruby red color, low alcohol content and range from dry to very sweet. Regala Banfi Rosa is sweeter and belongs to the 2% of the best wines in the world. It was also awarded a silver medal at the prestigious Los Angeles wine competition.


  • Variety: 100% Bracchetto, Italian rose bubbles
  • Title : Bracchetto d’Acqui, Piedmont, Italy.
  • The wine: Banfi
  • Alcohol: 7%
  • Bottle size: 750 ml

What we like about Banfi Rosa Regal

Pressed from Bracchetto grapes grown in the same vineyard. Cold maceration, followed by gentle extraction of the ions and intense strawberry aromas characteristic of the skin, give the wine its distinctive bright ruby red color. The wine is then filtered and stored at 0°C. It is then cooled in stainless steel tanks to obtain its final sweetness and sparkling character.

Very nice and extremely elegant, not only for a party, but also for any occasion as an aperitif. It goes well with savory dishes and seafood and can be enjoyed at the end of a meal with cheese, berries, fruit salad or another sweet dessert. Although with chocolate, it really is, thanks to the fragrant notes of rose petals and raspberries.

What we don’t like about Banfi Rosa Regal.

Don’t confuse it with a typical rose. It’s not! The sweetness of raspberries can be an acquired taste and too sweet for many drinkers. But we think it’s a good deal.


  • Cute, but not like that.
  • A refreshing alcohol content
  • Sexual consumption that seems to last forever.


  • You’re supposed to like raspberries.
  • Not for you, if you want your booze to taste like alcohol.
