First, the newbie that has taken the wine industry by storm, Abeja , launched their first restaurant in San Francisco and New York. The first place is a wine-themed fine dining restaurant . The second was the announcement from winery owners Neal and Lisa Walsh that they’re selling their majority stake in the wine company .
In a world of big, impersonal, chain restaurant experiences, Abeja is trying to offer something different. The owners of the restaurant took a look at the world of fine dining, and found it lacking. So, they decided to do what they could to bring back the personal interaction and the sense of place that they missed.
Fine dining experiences have been the staple of discerning diners for over a century. However, recent generations of diners are seeking out more innovative cuisine experiences, and Abeja is taking full advantage of this by launching a new fine dining experience. Set apart from other fine dining establishments by the chic and clean interior which is complemented by the elegant and modern design, the new restaurant is offering signature dishes that range from the familiar beef to eight-spice pork rib and braised beef cheeks to the more adventurous, like no-fry preparation of white fish, charred scallop and rolled pork belly.

Visitors to Abeja, a 38-acre historic Walla Walla farmhouse and home to the renowned Abeja winery and the idyllic Inn at Abeja, have even another incentive to come. The Kitchen at Abeja, a gourmet dining experience featuring creative wine country food and honoring the Pacific Northwest’s seasonal abundance, opened today at the vineyard.
Dinner customers at The Kitchen at Abeja may choose from a five- or seven-course prix fixe menu. An optional wine pairing menu will look at how different food and wine flavors compliment each other and make a dinner more enjoyable. The meals, which will be changed regularly, will be created by Executive Chef Elodie Li in collaboration with Abeja winemakers Dan Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler.
The Kitchen at Abeja offers a rich, sophisticated wine country experience, surrounded by the winery’s estate vineyards and gardens. The cuisine is an enticing mix of comfort and curiosity, focusing on fresh, local ingredients to produce a menu influenced by the most important culinary debates in America and Europe. For the creative professionals who run it, the Kitchen at Abeja is a kind of homecoming. Li, the executive chef, is a Washington native. She just returned to her home state after spending two years cooking at Michelin two-star restaurants in Provence, France. Li formerly worked at Seattle’s renowned Volterra with Chef Don Curtiss. The Kitchen at Abeja’s food and beverage service will be overseen by Tom Uberuaga. Uberuaga, who was born and reared in Poulsbo, Washington, came to Walla Walla in 2000 to establish Whitehouse-Crawford, and subsequently opened Walla Walla’s Creektown Café, a casual wine country restaurant. After a decade working in hospitality and design in upstate New York, he returned to Walla Walla in late 2020.
“From the beginning, Abeja has been about bringing people together. Offering excellent dining only feet from where our grapes are grown and wines are produced will elevate the experience,” said Alvarez-Wampfler, who shares winemaking and property management responsibilities with her husband at Abeja. “At Abeja, we’ve been planning a gastronomic experience that honors Northwest wineries in a setting that harkens back to Walla Walla’s pastoral past for years. We can’t wait to show it off to our visitors.”
Abeja has established itself as a famous wine country retreat recognized for its rural beauty, estate vineyards, and outstanding wines since its inception in 2000. The cottages and rooms at the Inn at Abeja have been carefully rebuilt from the property’s original outbuildings, which were originally a dairy farm.
